Building a Better Future with Music

Written by Olga Zharkova | June 21, 2023

Music can reshape our lives. It can foster empowerment. Through social music programs like Sinfonía por el Perú, music is helping young people worldwide to develop skills and learn key life values. This program intends to help them find the way to a self-determined future by instilling in them a sense of community, a philosophy of helping others and all the ancillary benefits that come along with learning and playing an instrument in an orchestra. These include teamwork, diligence, collaboration and a passion for empathy.

In this documentary Juan Diego Flórez and Roberto González-Monjas, esteemed figures in the world of classical music, delve into their shared vision of using music as a transformative force, demonstrating its potential to bring about profound change and inspire the next generation.

The Broader Impact of Music

Music can change lives, especially for children who are often neglected by society.

Juan Diego Flórez

World-renowned opera tenor Juan Diego Flórez, celebrated for his exceptional bel canto technique, has dedicated his life not only to his career but also to transforming lives through music. He is the founder of Sinfonía por el Perú, a social initiative that provides music education to underprivileged children in Peru.

Through his work with this music program, acclaimed violinist and conductor Roberto González-Monjas, inspires young musicians to look beyond the act of making music and playing concerts and to understand the broader impact on their lives and communities.

Music is a metaphor for change, excellence and humanity.

Roberto González-Monjas

Shared Vision

Both of these esteemed figures in the world of classical music are heavily involved in Sinfonía por el Perú, a social music program that has been supported by the Hilti Foundation since its inception in 2011. The program is currently helping more than 7000 children and youths in Peru.

Hilti strives to support and uplift communities through innovative solutions and unwavering commitment. Sharing this vision, Flórez and González-Monjas are using music to inspire, communicate with and engage the next generation, linking it to a deep alignment between the program’s mission and Hilti’s values of integrity, courage, teamwork and commitment.

"Hilti as a company excels at what it does best and also dedicates time and resources to giving back to the world," notes González-Monjas. This partnership highlights the joint commitment Hilti and Sinfonía por el Perú have to fostering human growth and community enrichment through the power of music. Flórez adds: "We share the same mission: the development of people."

Symphony of Transformation

For many of the program’s young musicians, performing at Europe's most prestigious festivals also reflects another milestone: their first time being abroad.

One of the key aspects of the program is cultural exchange—the young talents not only see a new place and interact with different people, they also serve also as ambassadors of their country. They embody national pride, representing their country in the best possible manner and realizing that their efforts extend beyond merely performing concerts.

It is a remarkable, life-changing experience, giving them a sense of accomplishment and a glimpse of a brighter future.

The kids of Sinfonía por el Perú know that alone, you cannot achieve a lot. But together, you can really conquer the world.

Juan Diego Flórez
